child anger management

We have all had those moments as a parent when your toddler breaks down and even screams. Your child gets mad about losing at a game and pushes the game board off the table while they are crying. Then emotional teen years as you hear them yelling and slamming the door leaving the room. So learning how to teach your child anger management skills is useful.

Toddlers
With a toddler it’s hard to get them to understand what you are saying, they are frustrated with not being able to explain their feelings and needs. If your toddler gets frustrated go down on your knees to their level, say that you know they are mad, and try to help them figure out what is making them mad, sometimes it’s something you can fix such as a stuck zipper, other times it’s something they will just have to live with, like putting away their toys. If the temper tantrum goes into kicking, hitting, screaming, you may want to pick up your child and hold them in your lap till they calm down. On some kids this makes them more upset, so always have a place such as their room that they can be put into till they calm down.

Kids
It is easier as your child gets older and able to explain their feelings.. A way to start is to teach them steps to try calming down, a good suggestion to calm down is to remove yourself from the person who is getting you mad, and take some deep breaths while counting down backwards till they are able to talk calmly to the person that was getting them mad. They can do that anywhere they happen to be such as school or group activity. If they get mad at themselves for not being able to do something, try a alternative such as asking a parent or teacher to help them learn or get better at something.

Teenagers
Teenagers can be taught to do the same as older children for handling anger. They can remove themselves from the situation and take breathes while counting. They can also learn to work out their anger, with activities such as drawing, writing, or exercising until they are calm and can think rationally again.

Always remember, your actions when you are mad is the best teacher, so always be a good role model when you are mad.
